MIGRAIN: Reading an image

Denotation:
I see a man with a fierce facial expression. His muscles are showing and he is wearing a chain. There are his hand prints on the left as the background and a fairly big sized font. The name of the brand RBK is shown at the bottom.

Connotation:
The man is in fact 50 Cent, a famous celebrity so his image attracts many of his fans. The fierce facial expression staring right at the camera is showing seriousness and looking directly at the audience, targeting them so there is a direct mode of address, creating a connection with the audience. The scars on his muscles as well as the chain show strength and power. The hand prints on the background show a criminal record. This is appealing to people as it shows how he managed to be successful even after going to prison and having a criminal record. The name of the brand is to tell people what the poster is for.

Colour:
The colour of this poster is very dark. The poster uses a very mono-chrome colour scheme. This connotes violence and rebelliousness. Its very simple and understood by all cultures.

Pose:
There is a direct mode of address to the audience. 50 Cent is directly looking at the audience in order to create a connection with them. He has a serious face as well as the intentional showing of the scars on his muscles to emphasis power.

Framing:
There is an equal amount of space for 50 Cent and the criminal record on the right. The Serif font takes the central area of the poster, probably to make sure the audience take notice of it.

Composition:
50 Cent in this poster is not at the centre. This is because the audience recognises the other aspects of the poster such as the tagline "i am what i am" and the quote by 50 Cent.

Size:
The tagline is very big and its at the centre so the audience at first glance reads it. Also the size of the quote by 50 Cent is significant because its readable easily and is located at the top of the poster so the audience takes notice of it.

Type of Shot:
Its a close-up of 50 Cents face to show his facial expression and a close-up of the fingerprints so the audience knows what they are.

Subject matter:
There is 50 Cent and fingerprints. This is to show that the poster is about him and his lifestyle. Even though there was crime and violence (shot 7 times), he is still successful. This is a celebrity endorsement by RBK.

Setting:
The setting is unidentifiable as it is a clear black background. However, because of the finger prints to the left, the audience can assume that its some sort of prison cell or hold-up. This shot was possibly taken in an interview with an officer.

Lighting:
The lighting is low-key. This is to add emphasis to the feeling of violence and crime to success.

Denotation:
There is a man looking like his training to fight. His muscles are showing and he has a boxing like belt. There is big sized text on the left which takes as much space as he does.

Connotation:
The man is Muhammad Ali, probably the most famous boxer in existence therefore many people would pay attention to the poster. The way his positioned is to demonstrate power. The belt shows success, strength and achievement as it is only given to the best. The copy takes the same amount of space as he does to emphasis its importance.

Colour:
The colour of the background is different to the main image of Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali had a mono-chromatic colour scheme while the background has a vibrant yellow colour. This is to show that he had a tough life and he still managed to succeed. The contrast between his life and his success.

Pose:
Muhammad Ali is doing a fighting-like pose. This is to show the audience motivation, power and determination.

Framing:
The main image of Muhammad Ali is taking up half the poster while the tagline "Float Like A Butterfly Sting Like A Bee" is taking the other half. This is to show equal importance of both the copy and the main person in the poster.

Composition:
The main image of Muhammad Ali is composing half the poster while the tagline is taking the other half. This is to show equal importance of both the copy and the Muhammad Ali in the poster.

Size:
The tagline's size "Float Like A Butterfly Sting Like A Bee" is really big to show the audience its importance. It is so the reader takes notice of it and reads it for motivation as it is a classical saying.

Type of Shot:
It is a long shot of Muhammad Ali to show his full stance for power and strength.

Subject Matter:
There is big text on the left and the image of Muhammad Ali on the right. This is to show there equal importance.

Setting:
The setting is unidentifiable in order for the audience to presume. It looks like a fighting arena or a gym because of his fighting stance and the colour of the background.

Lighting:
Muhammad Ali has low-key lighting and the background is high-key. This is to show the comparison of his life hardship and his current success.
